Trying to find the right travel trailer for your needs is like trying to find true love on the internet, it can be done but the choices are overwhelming. Let us help you narrow it down! (The camper. We can’t help you with your love life.)
Check out this popular unit from Jayco, an RV manufacturer known for their longevity, quality and reasonable prices. We’ve collected all the pertinent information in one convenient place for you to decide if this travel trailer is the right match for you.
The Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH is a great RV for campers who like to keep it simple, don’t want to sell a kidney to afford a quality RV, and who will not be camping with all of their relatives. Small and sleek, this single axle RV pulls smoothly, so long as you’re not throwing in the kitchen sink (it already has one!) and your vehicle has enough tow rating to prevent the white-knuckle driving that comes with towing too close to max towing capacity.
This travel trailer may be ideal for folks who like their simple comforts, but aren’t looking to long-term park their RV, and do not need five slides and 3 TV’s. Some find a smaller camper cozy, others will find it cramped with about a 7’ width and 21’ overall length.
PROS
- Smaller camper that can be pulled by a wider variety of vehicles
- Fixed, true Queen sized bed (not a Murphy bed or fold down couch)
- No slides
- Affordable price point, as an entry-level travel trailer
- Will fit in most slots at RV parks and campgrounds
- Great for campers who are just starting out or looking to downsize into something smaller
- Requires a smaller storage area
- Jayco Quality
CONS
- Smaller travel trailer without slides—can sleep up to 5, but it will be a tight fit
- Odd USB port placement at the head of the bed
- No bathroom fan for the vent (can be installed, if desired)
- Lacks some comforts that mid and top tier campers have standard (ex. Sink and storage in the bathroom, drawers in the kitchen, 4+ person seating in the dining room, a living room with couch or theater chairs, a TV in an easily viewable space, hanging closet space)
- Base model has limited fresh, gray and black tank capacities that could make long term boondocking difficult
Find out what Josh the RV Nerd thinks is great about this travel trailer (the size of the bed!) and what items left him scratching his head (the odd USB port and what is up with that bathroom vent, anyway?) in the video walkthrough of the Jayco Jay Flight 174BH below.
Keep in mind, Josh is reviewing the 2023 Jayco Jay Flight SXT 174BH but this camper has many comparable options available under the label of “BAJA” for units manufactured in the west. Always be sure to ask your outfitter what options are installed on any RV you’re looking to buy!
