Tips for Maintaining Your RV Rubber Roof

Posted On: July 29, 2013

The roof on your RV is the most important part of your unit, no matter if you use your RV part-time or full-time. Regular roof maintenance is required on all types of roofs, especially rubber roofs. Without regular maintenance, you run the risk of damage to your roof. Even the littlest things can damage your roof, like a tree branch. Finding the smaller, fixable problems is always easier and less expensive than waiting until the major problems happen. Here are a few maintenance tips for RV rubber roofs.

If your unit was made in the last few years, you probably have a rubber roof called Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. EPDM rubber roofs are made to last 20 years or longer.

  • The only maintenance recommended for a EPDM rubber roof is cleaning the roof four times a year.
  • The correct cleaning product is very important for an EPDM rubber roof. NEVER use cleaners or conditioners containing petroleum solvents, harsh abrasives or citric based cleaners. These cleaners will cause serious damage and void your warranty. Cleaners you can use: the manufacturers recommended brand cleaner or a mild laundry detergent.
  • If you’ve had your rig for a few years and you notice the roof surface is chalky, no worries. This is a normal process of aging. A regular roof cleaning will reduce chalk buildup and minimize white streaks on the sides of your RV.
  • After the roof is clean, be sure to inspect all the roof seams, around vents, air conditioners, etc. to make sure the caulking is still in good condition.
